Nocturnal Rumination: On spelling and the state of American Education.

13 Nov

I saw something on which authorities was spelled “attoritys.”  I wish the comprehension and ability of English was further spread than it is currently.  Yet, I then remember that only 50 years previous, we had states that had 20 to 30% illiteracy rates.  This reminds me something a dear friend and a wonderful professor once said about the ahistorical means through which we view education, generally:

“We tend to whitewash the past, portraying those who wrote it as those that lived during the events.  This is not the case, and as a general rule, things are far, far better now than they were then.”
